In the news today

Well, I've sort of given up on my "writing my beliefs down" escapade. I do not see the point anymore, and I'm not nearly articulate enough to make a good job of it.
However, I still believe that sometimes things with little point still may have great value.
I just don't have the time.

I have recently arrived back from visiting my parents in coffs harbour, a beautiful town half way from sydney to brisbane. I worked in a bookstore there, which is owned & operated by my parents. I had a good time there, and spending so much time around books made me want to read more than usual. Oh, to be a full time reader! I could sit at home all day and indulge in so many books... sometimes I wonder if i chose the wrong profession... after all, I don't get to read much except text books studying Software engineering. So the books I read are usually strictly for leisure, nothing too challenging. Which is a shame, because I enjoy a challenging book on occasion.
I MUST finish reading Joyce's Ulysses! I have tried twice, and never finished it - Shame on me!
I am presently reading Bill Clinton's memoirs, My Life, which is immensely interesting. Not because of any sordid affairs with interns, but because it really paints a picture of how a man came to be what came to be. It is somewhat inspiring, and as an Australian reading the memoirs of a great American, it provides an inside view of a country I have only looked on from the outer. Also It has shown me that no matter how maligned someone may be, no matter how evil or stupid they may seem, there is still a very real human underneath. The decisions they make are affected by the tapestry of their own history, and often are very carefully justified.
Before I only ever perceived Clinton as a president. After reading not even half of his book, I see him as a regular ol' guy who has become great through strength of conviction and the power of his personality. It really makes me wonder about Bush, who is portrayed as an idiot (perhaps rightly so). But he's a realy guy too, and I'm sure he has reasons behind all he does. Doesn't mean I hope he gets re-elected, in fact I fervently hope he doesn't, but I'd like to hear his side of the story.

1. Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha walk into a bar...

Religion. One of the biggest sources of conflict in recent times, and I think its fair to say that along with greed, one of the biggest sources of conflict EVER.
Politically religion is a big thing, especially in America. Man, people get real fired up. So I figure I'm gonna start with a big topic, figure how I feel, and get this whole belief clarification thingo rolling.

Now, some atheists argue that religion is a construct, developed by those in power to appease the lowly. After all, most people rolling around in dirt wearing nothing but rags need something to look forward to, right? So religion is supposed to make them happy about hardship, put up with all the shite they go through, and not kick up too much of a stink when the bloody land lord comes around.

I don't subscribe to this theory, but it's a valid one. Why? Because all religion is based around a fundamental concept of love and pacifism. Sure, there's by-laws and amendments, but overall, when Jesus says "Love thy neighbour",
Mohammed smiles and nods, Buddha pats his belly in contentment, Jehovah grunts in assent... there is no real religion that says "Kill everyone, they're all scumbags out to screw you."
So whether you are a Jew, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Wiccan... whatever you are, theres a basic precept of love.

However, we need to remember theres no really NEW religions. Most are pretty ancient. So the reference books we have are somewhat(!) dated, and we need to take that into consideration. But overall, the wisdom contained in holy books is often what makes them so valued and holy. They contain many lessons that still resonate today. But some of them don't.

Before I get really rolling, I need to note: I come from a Christian background. That means most of the things I say are based on that background.

A) H-O-M-O-S-E-X-U-A-L-I-T-Y

This is not a new thing. Gay people have been around for yonks, sometimes more openly, sometimes more "closet". But they are there. We're in a rather open phase right now, and many people are scared. Gay people can't look after my kids. Gay people can't get married. Gay people can't have children!!!! Hysteria grows as Homosexuals start to act like heterosexuals - they kiss in public (GASP!) they hold hands, they want a family, they want symbols of commitment, they want to be like heterosexuals.

Good on them!

Religion has this thing in for Gay people. I think this stems from a purely functional standpoint - traditionally, they are of no use to society because they can't naturally bear children. So they don't have a bunch of brats to till the soil, plant the wheat, do the washing. Now in Old Testament times, this was essential. Now... not so.

So we have an antiquated book (which I have utmost respect for, make no mistake) that tells us Homosexuality is evil. But in our modern age, is it really THAT bad? we don't need more brats to till the soil. They don't hurt Heterosexuals. What we have now is a society where its almost acceptable to be publicly Gay. It makes NO impact on anyone except the individual! So why does the government really care? The Good Book?

Lets consider the Good Book, and the offences it outlines. Have you ever planted two different types of plants next to each other? Have you ever touched a pigs skin, eaten pork? Have you ever sewn a garment using two types of thread? Have you ever looked at porn? Really wanted to get down and dirty with that guy/girl, even though they are taken? Ever has sex (GASP!) before marriage?
Many of these "crimes" would have you stoned to death, or worse, according to the Good Book. A saying comes to mind: "Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house."
So give the Queeros a break, ok?

The final shot I take is this: Christianity is about freedom. God gave Christians the freedom to CHOOSE to follow him. Jesus taught Christians to love thy neighbour, your enemy, and everyone else. Jesus accepted the prostitutes into his company, accepted the outcasts. Jesus frowned upon those who cast judgement on others. Afterall, thats God's job innit? So please Christians, please, read the old testament less and the new testament more. Gay people have that freedom to choose, just as you do. Leave the judgement, death and punishment with the Big Man.

B) ABORTION

Many of the same arguments to above apply here, about freedom to choose. It is so ironic, however, when Pro-lifers run in and beat up doctors who perform abortions. Even here in Australia, a protestor (pro-lifer, of course) SHOT a doctor. Killed him. Pro life my arse.

Furthermore many arguments are based on the idea that life exists as soon as sperm wriggles his lucky little way into an egg. I disagree. That is the beginning of a chemical reaction. There is a potential for life there, I agree. But theres also a potential for death, miscarriage, and a multitude of other mishaps. I have the potential to be a millionaire, and my girlfriend has the potential to be a worldwide singing sensation. But are we? No. We might end up being in said positions, but theres a question of likelyhood there. And when the other option is that a woman ends up with a baby she doesn't want, begotten on her by her friendly local RAPIST, screw pro-life. Even if the kid is born, by the age of 15, he/she probably wouldn't want to have been.

This post will likely receive editing at some point. Theres so much to mention, so much to talk about. But I'm tired , and need to sleep. More on abortion, God in Government and fundamentalism next time.

A selfish self-inflicted interrogation of self for self gratification

Think of the world today. Just think of the news you have seen in the last week. Think of September 11, Iraq, Palestine. Think of Northern Ireland, South Africa, South America, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, China, India.

Got the image? Hold it for a minute, and you realise-

Hey. We got issues.

Left/Right, Capitalist/Socialist/Communist, Industry/Environment, War/Peace, MacDonalds/BurgerKing, Bush/Michael Moore... Everyone has an answer. Fix this, change that, hey presto, the world's gonna be "fixed" again.

But fixed for who?

I'm gonna make an effort to start writing down what I believe in. Chances are it'll be a lot like most people. But I want to chronicle my beliefs, write 'em down, get an idea of what my world view is.

'Cause right now, I don't know what I believe in, or where I stand. I feel confused. And if I were to approach
this world from the point of view of an Innocent, say, 4 year old, and really perceive it for the monster it is....

I have a feeling I'd turn around to my mother and say: "Mummy, this world is seriously fucked." I'd then run away screaming. Out of fear of the world, and of my mother, who'd probably still spank me at 21 for speaking such filth.

And believe me... In this day and age, sadly, 4 year olds often do know the F word.

Pilgrims in grey and white stockings

Its been a while since last blogging. What has happened since then?

Work: Had some big performance issues in one of our systems, but after some weekend work and all round team effort, a new package has been installed with about 50% performance increase! needless to say, thats plenty good enough. Hopefully management will be happy...

Meanwhile, I finish up next week, on wednesday. Goodness me. Its been 6 months, and I'm gonna miss my team *sniff* - they're all really cool people, with good hearts and sharp minds. Everyone with their own foibles and idiosyncrasies, and each person lovable in their own way. I'll miss them indeed. If working in the industry is anything like this after I graduate, I'll be a happy man.

On a similar note, while filling out a performance review document, I realised how much I've achieved. Its quite phenomenal how much I've learned and how much I've gained in real-world skills. I only hope it helps me succeed in the next session of uni, and in the future while looking for jobs. Its amazing how much you can mature after a short time in the industry, as a worker and as a person. But it also humbles you, cause you begin to realise that we are all just pilgrims in grey and white stockings, trying to climb the corporate mountain. Many delusions of grandeure developed in uni melt away and harsh reality slaps you a few times and you realise "Well, I suppose it IS pretty hard to be a billionaire. I'll just have to settle with being a Millionaire". Quite dissapointing really. :)

Uni: Finished Business Chinese, passed, its all good homie! Trying to plan a china trip end of next year: studying in Qingdao, which is reportedly one of the most beautiful cities in china, and its close to beijing and cheap to boot. Hopefully spend six months there if possible, and do a bit of travelling around. Definitely a must if I want to be anywhere approaching fluent.

Flatmates: E & C are trying to quit smoking!! Ha Ha Ha... I'm hoping they'll succeed but somehow I'll doubt it. its been 5 days. E still counts the hours since his last Ciggie :)

On the whole, I'm happy with everything now. E made the comment that you only Blog when extremely unhappy or extremely happy. Maybe he's right :)

back to uni, so what next?

Well, in other news I have capitulated to the evil forces of the student union.
I gave em their stinking 200 bucks, but i wasn't happy about it. I might strap myself to a pole and go on a hunger strike in the near future to protest, but for now, I have access to my enrolment and life may proceed with normality.

So what courses to do? Well... an interesting conundrum.

my interests surround -
  • real time systems

  • concurrency

  • formal methods in system design

  • So I'm doing a course on concurrency, which should be interesting,
For those who don't know what concurrency is... well a loose definition could be that
concurrency in an IT context involves the problems that occur when two processes interact, or try to access the same resource at the same time. It's an interesting area.

real time systems I can't study till I study Operating Systems, so I'll study OS next session.

and a chinese course... nothing that really excites me. I've chosen classical literature, but that may change. I'm somewhat jaded after this session's chinese effort.

and MAYBE a cryptography course. Computer security is big these days... could be lucrative to get into.

    anyway, we'll see.

    Sun makes love with Fujitsu

Breaking news today in the halls of Sun... Sun and fujitsu are going to merge their product lines.
Sounds like an interesting prospect! It makes sense for Sun... share R&D costs, yet another vendor pushing Solaris hard etc etc. But when you read between the lines, you gotta wonder... How are we going to compete with a company that sells the same products as us? On services? software?
Somehow i don't think this is the plan.
Sun has been trumpeting their intentions of moving towards a services/software company, concentrating on core efforts etc. So if they move the whole selling of hardware out of the company, they've saved a shitload on salaries for sales reps. So they can concentrate on developing their services, developing solaris and java and other more viable offerings.

And then, Jonathan Schwartz says we will give away hardware with software. Maybe thats why they don't care if Fujitsu sells the same stuff. After all, Fujitsu's SPARC chips shit all over Sun's.

So! Seems like a good move from Sun. Save money on costs, give the hardware away and sell services and software. So we need sales reps... for our solutions. sales reps to tell people to buy sun services and software. After all, people trust sun's software even if they don't know it... most people STILL think java belongs to IBM :)

    enough of this rant.

    Anyway,

Redundancies, student fees and all things smelly

To start with a bit of info, I work at Sun Microsystems. I'm an intern here, working in the IT department. My contract was to finish at the end of the year... up until yesterday.

So yesterday I'm having a meeting with my manager, and he tells me: "In line with cost reductions etc etc,
your contract will be finishing on june 30".
    Silence.
    More Silence.
"So my contract will be finishing on june 30?"
    "Yes."
    Even more silence.

and so the conversation continued. Now I was dissapointed, upset etc. Never angry, just dissapointed.
So i went home, went to the gym to sweat out a bit of dissapointment, come back and start rethinking the next six months.
Go back to uni? Find another full time position?
Go back to uni. Find a casual position. try to complete my degree in less time.
Slowly the silver lining to this cloud becomes apparent.

So I log on to UNSW's enrollment system. Or try to:
"Sorry, this service is blocked..." why? well I haven't paid student union fees.

Student union membership is compulsory in australia.
    what a crock of shit!
While working full time, I am studying ONE subject. Yes, one, and the union requires me to pay 200 dollars to them. Lets list the services I get.

  • Membership to a sports association. i don't play sports.

  • A crappy, longwinded and dastardly attempt to single handedly turn the world into communist, feminist hippies all at once. Oh, sorry, I should have said the student union newspaper, Tharunka.

  • 10% off food at union food outlets, where the food really ain't that good anyway

  • student legal advice for students who want to appeal against markers. Basically for losers who fail and can't cop it.

  • rape counselling. For all the times I've been raped on campus by student union board members.

  • other useless shit

  • So yes, I'm in need of accessing my information, changing my enrollment and so forth. But I can't, and the union is holding me by the short and curlies demanding I give them money so they can continue their communist, facist regime.

    I hate student unions.
In the famous words of Janet Jackson /Eddy Murphy.
"EDDDYYYYYY.... WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELYYYYYY"

    Bah, humbug.

    hrmmmm...

So here we have it, a blog. For me. How very special that I, usually somewhat lazy, though not very lazy, but lazy enough, would decide to waste time and create a paragon amoung time wasting tools. A blog. not a big one, or a special one, but a blog, for me to share with the world.

I'm excited. Are you? Well, don't be.

and the title? I don't get it either. Just a random statement of fact so fashionable these tumultuous days. sort of like "war is bad" and "peace is good" and "your fly is undone".

Heres my link for the day. Its about Java's realtime specification... very interesting.

    http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Interviews/Bollella_qa.html

and now you know.. I am a Nerd.

and I was just kidding. Your fly isn't REALLY down.

    HAHA

    :)
